In other words, Outliers is written to help to unravel how some people got to the top. “Our hero was born in modest circumstances,” Gladwell writes, “and by virtue of his own grit and talents fights his way to greatness,” However, it is Malcolm Gladwell’s belief that by focusing on personal descriptions we often miss things like, hidden advantages, extraordinary opportunities and cultural legacies. Quite often I look at other artists and the people who have gone before me and think, what can I learn from them and also what am I looking for? In his book ‘Outliers, The Story of Success,’ Malcolm Gladwell believes that we often focus on people’s personalities and intelligence. ‘Outliers, The Story of Success’ by Malcolm Gladwell – book reviewĪs an artist, the idea of wanting to make an impressive declaration through your work, and reaching for the top is understandable this happens in almost any field, not just in art. 6/7/2023 0 Comments Scratch by Manjula MartinIn reading this collection, I was struck by the varied and individual business and financial situations faced by the authors. Divided into three sections, Scratch takes readers from the “Early Days” of trying to break into the industry, through the “Daily Grind,” of being a working writer, and on to that dreamed of “Someday” when the young writer has finally made it. In a selection of essays and interview with writers from a variety of fields and at different stages of their careers, Manjula Martin aims to peel back the layers of polite obfuscation and create some transparency about the business and financial aspects of the American writer’s market. But the discussion of writing as an art form predominates, and discussing money remains a bit taboo. And there are some books about the business of writing, too, such as how to become a freelance writer, or find an agent. Library and book store shelves overflow with them. There are many books about writing as an art form. Also, what made Syd Hoff's illustrations truly creative is that there would be a set of two pages that are mainly in brown, black and white and then the next set of two pages would be in all kinds of color, which is a similar format that Madeline's Rescue had. Syd Hoff's illustrations are both creative and cute at the same time as the dinosaur that Danny encounters looks extremely friendly and the dinosaur's body would usually take up the pages that he is on and Danny himself is an extremely cute and friendly looking child as he always has a smile on his face when he is around the dinosaur. Syd Hoff has done an outstanding job at both illustrating and writing this book. "Danny and the Dinosaur" is a true masterpiece for many children who love books about dinosaurs! "Danny and the Dinosaur" is a New York Times Outstanding Book of the Year Award by Syd Hoff and it is about how a young boy named Danny starts playing with a friendly dinosaur who has come to life when in a museum that Danny goes to. 6/6/2023 0 Comments War and peace clothboundThis edition also contains appendices, notes, a list of prominent characters and maps. Anthony Briggs' superb translation combines stirring, accessible prose with fidelity to Tolstoy's original, while Orlando Figes' afterword discusses the novel's vast scope and depiction of Russian identity. In War and Peace, Tolstoy entwines grand themes - conflict and love, birth and death, free will and faith - with unforgettable scenes of nineteenth-century Russia, to create a magnificent epic of human life in all its imperfection and grandeur. The stories of quixotic Pierre, cynical Andrey and impetuous Natasha interweave with a huge cast, from aristocrats and peasants to soldiers and Napoleon himself. Terror swiftly engulfs the country as Napoleon's army marches on Russia, and the lives of three young people are changed forever. At a glittering society party in St Petersburg in 1805, conversations are dominated by the prospect of war. This beautiful Penguin Classics clothbound edition of Tolstoy's great novel is translated with an introduction and notes by Anthony Briggs, and with an afterword by Orlando Figes. 6/5/2023 0 Comments Neil gaiman and todd mcfarlaneIf all of this sounds vaguely familiar, it's because McFarlane and Gaiman have gone a few rounds already, once back in 2002, and again in 2004, when that original 2002 decision - which granted Gaiman co-ownership of those Spawn #9 characters - was unsuccessfully appealed. Which is good, because if broadly derivative characters were made illegal, every superhero comic ever made would promptly vanish in a puff of jurisprudence.) (Note here that legally, "derivative" means something very specific. In this case, whether or not certain McFarlane characters are derivative of characters that Gaiman created in Spawn #9, a 1993 issue that he guest-wrote. Kastenmeier United States Courthouse in Madison, Wisconsin.Īt issue: What every comic book legal battle is always about - creators' rights. The octagon in question: Room 261 of the Robert W. The combatants: Todd McFarlane (hugely successful artist/entrepreneur and creator of Spawn, a character that was to comics in the '90s what Justin Bieber is to Twitter), and Neil Gaiman (y'all know who he is). For the past month, over on her blog, the great and good Maggie Thompson has been chronicling an unfolding legal battle that has implications for comic book creators, publishers and fans. With forgiveness, love, and the spring thaw, there might be hope for a new season - a second chance Rae believed in her heart was gone forever. To finally move forward, Rae must confront them and also fight for Quinn, whose parents have other plans in mind for their son. But its depths - and all its revelations and secrets-have yet to come to light. Now Quinn has found a temporary home with the Langdons - and an unexpected kinship, because Rae, Quinn, and Connor share a past and understand one another's pain. Quinn has been thrown out by his parents, a couple too troubled to help steer the misunderstood boy through his own losses. A gripping, openhearted novel about family, reconciliation, and bringing closure to the secrets of the past. As memories sweep through her, some too precious to bear, Rae gives shelter from a brutal winter to a teenager named Quinn Galecki. With her father, Connor, she tends to their Ohio farm, a forty-acre spread that itself has enjoyed better days. A gripping, openhearted novel about family, reconciliation, and bringing closure to the secrets of the past.Įarly into the tempestuous decade of her thirties, Rae Langdon struggles to work through a grief she never anticipated. ĭuring the opening scenes of Strangers on a Train (1951), Farley Granger appears to be reading a hardback copy of Alfred Hitchcock's Fireside Book of Suspense Stories (1947).Ī second wave of anthologies followed from 1957, predominantly released by Dell Publishing, to capitalise on the success of the Alfred Hitchcock Presents television series. It's uncertain if Hitchcock was actually involved in the book selection or just licensed his name for use by the book club. In February 1946, Hitchcock's was advertised as one of the "board of judges" for the Unicorn Mystery Book Club, along with Orson Welles, Arch Oboler, Lewis J. The first books to use his name were published in the 1940s, starting with The Pocket Book of Great Detectives (1941).Īccording to an advertisement in the New York Times Book Review (07/Mar/1943), Hitchcock provided an introduction to Intrigue: The Spy Novels of Eric Ambler. As with Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine, Hitchcock simply licensed his name for use by the publisher. Although many of the anthologies included an introduction from Hitchcock, most sources agree that the director had minimal, if any, involvement with the books and that the introductions were typically ghostwritten by the publisher's in-house editor assigned to compile each collection. |
